staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

ogr-verify failed to run last night (permission problem in the database) so
the completion numbers didn’t update. I restarted it and the numbers will
update when it’s done (should be around 18:00 GMT). Sorry about that.

Just a few words about how the completion numbers are generated. The
single “Percent Complete” number is actually the average of how far along
we are for pass 1 and pass 2. The current breakdown of how things are
going is:

project_id | pass1_pct | pass2_pct | tot_pct
————+———–+———–+———
24 | 85.23 | 49.70 | 67.46
25 | 81.90 | 47.60 | 64.75

Also, these numbers represent the number of stubs done. Given that some
stubs require much more work than others, the percent complete may not be
a linear representation of how much work is left to do. On the other hand,
the work returned is spread out fairly evenly across the stubspace, so it
should be close.

We had a partial password reminder run with mailman this past weekend, but
it was stopped prior to completion … sooo, I’m going to run it again
manually. My apologies in advance for subscribers that receive duplicate
password reminders.

The change to the RC5-64 pages is done.

Something that was changed when we migrated RC5 to the current statsrun code
was to add the ability to scale how things were being displayed on the pages.
As part of this, we decided that for RC5 stats, we would store the number of
keys in the database going forward, instead of the number of blocks. This is
how RC5-72 data is stored, but -64 data is still stored in the old format.

I’m currently running a script that is changing all this data. While it’s
running, there might be some odd things showing up in the RC5-64 pages. Please
ignore them. :)

Your years of waiting are over. We now have completion data for OGR.

See http://stats.distributed.net/projects.php?project_id=24 (and 25) for
all the fun.

Note that we’re not done. Expect to see a bit more data coming in the
future.

Recently I have been working on some of the international language support on
the distributed.net home page. Along with some minor changes to the navigation
for all languages, I have also begun translating the web pages to Esperanto
(Esperanto is an international language invented in the 1880s that is now
spoken by millions of people in all countries around the world). If you
know Esperanto, feedback would be most appreciated – I’ve only just started
learning!

Many thanks to Russ Williams for helping with some of the Esperanto
translations.
