staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Several new clients have transitioned from the pre-release page to the
official download page. You can check out the list of newly available
clients on http://www.distributed.net/download/updates.php

Additionally, some new pre-release clients have also been made
available for early testing on our pre-release download page:
http://www.distributed.net/download/prerelease.php

Some users have reported that the latest McAfee anti-virus 4266 DAT
file update inappropriately classifies dnetc.com as being a trojan.
We have already contacted them about this issue but we are still
awaiting their response on this matter.

Just another warning that full conversion of the rest of our mailing
lists (including rc5@, proxyper@, and announce@) from majordomo to
mailman will be occurring very soon. There is no need to be alarmed
when you receive an email welcoming your subscription to a list that
you already thought you belonged to.

After an amazing 761 days of trouble-free uptime it looks like the server
oldnodezero.distributed.net spontaneously rebooted. This machine was the first
dedicated distributed.net server and hosted our website, dns, mail, and a
variety of other critical services for much of the past five years.

Thanks to all the cows who have contributed to this machine’s stability over
the years and especially to visi.com for such a remarkably stable data center
and colo. I think the last reboot was to physically relocate the machine to
their new (at the time) data center.

A new MacOS X client has been put on the pre-release page for testing.
It is expected that this version should fix bug 3186. Additionally,
there is a new OS/2 time-limited beta on the pre-release that should
fix bug 1345.

Long time, no plan.

Distributed.Net has been running majordomo since inception and it is finally
time for us to join others in putting majordomo 1.x to rest as many others
before us. To that end, we have found a list manager, Mailman, which is feature
rich and fairly easy to migrate to from majordomo. There are many benefits to
list manager and subscribers alike, and we expect this change to improve the
experiences of both.

The first thing you will notice (after you fix your in-box filters) is that
there is embedded list management information in every post thereby making it
easier for you to update your subscription. Upon following one of the links you
will be brought to a web based interface allowing you to change email delivery
preferences and detail other lists you may be subscribed to. You will now also
receive a monthly password reminder for your list subscriptions which will
double as a bounce detection email. Finally, we will eventually be able to
offer real-time web archives of hosted mailing lists.

We have converted some lower volume lists so far and are working through
learning how best to use the new tools and features available to out greatest
advantage. Expect the larger lists, like rc5@lists, to be converted later this
month.

We’re currently in the process of migrating our mailing list software
from majordomo to mailman. It is expected that the change will give
us improved backend manageability and flexibility of the mailing lists.
Mailman also provides better bounced message handling, and a web-based
interface that people can use to subscribe and unsubscribe.

Although we are trying to keep the mailing list subscription lists and
configuration settings as close as possible to the existing majordomo
operations, there are a few changes that will immediately affect our
list subscribers. In particular, you may find that you need to update
your mail program’s filtering/sorting rules if you use any.

More details will be provided as they become available.

More than twenty client builds have been transferred from the
pre-release page to the official release page. Please see
http://www1.distributed.net/download/updates.php for the list.

A handful of new pre-release clients have also been added to the
pre-release page for early testing by the courageous.

The proxy1.madsn.wi.us fullproxy stopped talking to the master for about two
days, which means that work sent to that proxy didn’t show up in stats. The
proxy is talking to the master now, and has flushed all it’s work. I believe
it was done flushing before yesterday’s statsrun, so all the work has probably
showed up in stats by now; if not it will show up in tonight’s run.

As Accipiter mentioned in his plan a few days ago, we have just
launched a redesign of our website that is up-to-date with modern
web-design standards. We’ve tried to keep the appearance relatively
close to the style of the old website, so you might not even notice
any difference if you’re not looking carefully enough.

Optimal viewing of our website now requires the use of a modern
web-browser that honors CSS, which means that Netscape Navigator 4.x
is out. We’ve also taken this opportunity to synchronize the content
on some of our foreign-language translation pages.

There have also been a lot of URL changes due both in part to the
conversion to PHP and the reorganization of certain redundant pages.
Where possible, we’ve tried to put redirects in place to allow the
majority of traffic continue to reach the page that was originally
being requested. If you have bookmarks or pages that link to our
website, you might want to take this opportunity to update them and
possibly remove links to pages that no longer exist.

Similar updates to our stats site and n0cgi will probably be done
gradually and independently over the following few weeks as time is
available. If you notice any problems with specific webpages on our
site, feel free to send an email to bovine@distributed.net or open a
bug in our bugzilla database.

The master was down several hours today for a planned outage. Because of this,
the amount of work in stats for today will be a bit low. The ‘missing’ work
will show up tomorrow.

The statsrun was also delayed due to a minor bug. Stats are running now and
should be complete within an hour.

Looks like the new site is ready to go live. It should go up in the next day or
so, and is totally valid XHTML/CSS. This has been in the works for some time,
and is looking real good.
