staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Yesterday we finally got in touch with the CSC winner. He’s graciously
allowed us to turn you guys loose on him by mentioning his name.

The CSC winner was Paul Ilardi, a grad student at the University of
Rochester in Rochester, NY, USA. He looked through his local proxy logs
and was able to determine that the winning machine was a Sparc Ultra 1
and he’s even snapped a picture of the box.

Congratulations, Paul!

I have just resigned from distributed.net.

Please understand that the organization has done nothing to prompt this.
I am leaving for purely personal reasons, which I’d rather not discuss
publicly, and have no hard feelings whatsoever towards the organization
or any of its members.

Keep on cracking.

We’ve been told by a number of users that their dnetc clients have
failed to automatically resume RC5 after the client had received the
CSC contest closure indicator. The problem seems to affect a fair
number of machines, and it may be necessary for you to manually quit
and restart your client to get it to properly resume RC5. No other
actions should be necessary (provided your client has already figured
out that CSC is over, by allowing it to talk to the keyservers).
