distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

I’m working on some stats changes that will require a short outage of the
website. Also, we’ll be cutting back over to blower for www for a short
time to better understand why running web access off blower lunches Sybase.
That test should hopefully be pretty seamless for users, though.

Just to update folks on what’s up with stats; it’s having some issues with
Sybase unhappiness. To try and work around/isolate the problem, I’ve cut
way back on the number of webserver processes running. This will probably
manifest itself during the RC5 run, with people being unable to connect
to the database.
http://decibel.org/~decibel/stuff/freebsd-database.txt has details. I’m
not sure if this is FreeBSD related or not, as I recall having a very
similar problem on tally a year or two ago.

No joy on the memory upgrade. The Dell 6450 that we have has a memory card
that will only take EDO, while the memory we bought is SDRAM. Hopefully,
we can replace the memory board, as it would seem silly to by putting
several year old memory technology into the box.
Anyway, stats should be up again shortly.

I’m going to turn webaccess off for a bit to help blower catch up on rc5.
Access will automatically come back in two hours.

As you know, stats.distributed.net now points to blower, the new and
improved Quad Xeon beast in the United Devices data center.
Current blower status: – OGR has catched up until January 2nd, 2002 –
RC5 is catching up, yes, if you’re seeing something like
“Data shown reflects all blocks received as of 17-Dec-2001” we’re busy
catching up. While stats are on, hmm, processor power…

Ok, I guess stats were off a bit longer than I planned. Look on the bright
side; it allowed blower to do some catching up. :)
With web access turned off, Dec. 24th and 25th OGR ran in 1/2 hour (both
days, importing the logs and all). RC5 runs have varied between 1 and 2
hours.

I’m making some tweaks to the RC5 run, so stats are down atm. Should be
back soon.

Blower is up and running with real data now. It’s currently re-processing
the past few weeks of RC5 (at the rate of 1.5 hours per day of rc5!). It
also needs to reprocess 2 weeks of OGR.
We’re still checking things out, but expect it to become live as the new
statsbox very soon!

I’ve taken tally offline to get a final BCP for the migration to blower.
With any luck, stats will start the new year on a new box. :)
