staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Please be advised that we are in the middle of finishing up a
migration of our webserver to a new machine, so there many be an
increase in broken things over the new few days. Among these things
may include planfiles, the plan mailing lists, web home directories,
and possibly other things. Do not panic, remain calm. Thanks.

A few people have written me with an interest in the reasons behind the
decision to restrict arbitrary HTML in the “motto” field of teams and
participants. Although I’ve been replying individually when people email
me, I’ve created a FAQ entry that summarizes many of the reasons here:

We’ve had to make some changes to what’s allowed to be entered in the
“motto” field for both teams and participants on the stats site. Previously
these fields where unrestricted text fields that even allowed raw HTML to
be entered, however we’ve recently decided that those fields need to be
restricted to a more limited subset of tags. If your participant or team
page included customized HTML tags, you should consider modifying them to
instead use the allowed square-bracket alternatives that are listed on
the editing page (.., .., [BR], etc).

There appears to be a network problem at UD right now, so stats and cvs
(and one proxy) are unreachable. I’ve notified the appropriate staff.

AT&T seems to be having some issues in their network right now. I’m having
great difficulty getting to stats, although nodezero can hit the box fine.
Anyway, if you’re having trouble hitting any of our servers, I suggest
you just try again later.

Well, there’s good news and bad news.

Good news: I think I’ve finally squashed the last bug in the new statsrun
code, which was occasionally making the statsrun fail, requiring manual
intervention.

Bad news: as part of my debugging, I accidentally deleted all the OGR data
since 12/22/2001. No user or team settings were lost, so all that needs
to happen is re-running OGR from the 22nd to today. I’m going to do this
with web access turned off, so I’m hoping it will be done sometime tomorrow.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I’m trying to track down more bugs in the statsrun code, so I have web
access turned off again so I’m not fighting for CPU. Should be back on in
an hour or so.

Good news! We found the problem that was causing Sybase to crash. It was
a FreeTDS misconfiguration.

There is now only one obstacle preventing us from fully utilizing blower’s
capability: we can’t get multiple Sybase engines to run.

Running more than one engine results in random connections periodically
hanging for long periods of time (60+ seconds). Whenever this happens, we
get ‘ninit: set process group xxxxx, no such process’. Also, attempting
to dump/backup the database would result in Sybase just hanging (backups
work fine with a single engine, though)

This is Sybase 11.0.3 running on FreeBSD 4.4. We’ve tried the suggestions
in http://lists.openresources.com/FreeBSD/freebsd-database/msg00062.html,
to no avail.

If anyone’s been able to get multiple engines running under FreeBSD, advice
would be much appreciated! }:8)
