staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Now that we have 52 million rows in the main table for the new stats system,
it’s become obvious that we need to re-optimize things a bit. In order to do
this, I’ll be turning off web access for a while. I hope this will take less
than 2 hours. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Master is once again listening to blower, so OGR should start processing RSN.

Stats are back up. There is still a persistent problem with retrieving
OGR logs from the master, though. The issue is that blower’s IP isn’t
reversing. UD’s operations department has contacted the upstream
providers, who should have had this fixed Friday.

Just thought I’d include a link to Bug 2469 just so that people would
be aware of some of the outstanding issues with the planfile system.

Murphy is alive and well it seems. After upgrading blower to FBSD4.5, php no
longer wants to talk to sybase. This is most likely due to the hacks that
were made to get PHP to talk to sybase in the first place. Unfortunately, the
person who set this up in the first place isn’t around tonight, so the odds of
it getting fixed tonight aren’t too good. He’ll probably be around tomorrow,
though, and I’m hoping that he’ll recognize what PHP is doing and be able to
fix it quickly. Until then, don’t expect anything useful out of stats. :(

Stats will be going offline in about half an hour so we can do some
maintenance. We’ll try and keep the outage to a minimum, but the
site might continue to be slow for a bit even after we’re back.

There will also be a brief outage sometime this weekend so that we
can bring the box up to FBSD 4.5.

We’re having some difficulties getting logs to blower after an IP address
change. We’re working on it, and stats should be running soon.

Some network restructuring requires that stats.distributed.net be re-ip’d.
Please be patient if you experience any connectivity issues as things
propagate through DNS and settle down on this end.

Thanks.

Be advised that some network changes are occurring at the datacenter
where blower (stats.distributed.net) is hosted, so there might be some
connectivity issues while the DNS changes propagate.

Some minor issues discovered during the mail server changes were
fixed. This included some disruption of service to the email block
fetcher/flusher, and also some bounced mail that was sent to some
distributed.net staff mail addresses. If you received a bounce to
something you were trying to email, you might want to retry now.

This plan entry is mostly just a test to see if our plan system is
fully operational again. Some more things have successfully been
incrementally migrated off of one of our old servers (this time email,
plans, email fetch/flusher) as of tonight. With luck there will not
be any observable glitches. :)
