staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

I’m working on an improvement to our current team join code. The new code
will speed up the statsrun, and will make things a bit more accurate (the
current system bases team membership on a participant’s team setting at
the time of the statsrun, instead of noting the date that someone joins
a team and using that info to determine what team someone belonged to on
a given date).

Unfortunately, in order to do this, I have to disable team joins until
the conversion is complete.

As soon as the new join process is in place, I’ll be able to re-do the
statsrun to make use of the new data. Team joins will be re-enabled before
I tackle the statsrun though.

Just got back from a short trip.. somehow, tally knew I was gone and
decided to barf on OGR-25 stats last night. I’m way to tired to look into
it now, but I’ll work on it first thing tomorrow.

Well, it’s obviously taken quite a bit longer than I thought it would to
get the OGR-25 stats up and running. I tested multiple project’s on the
hourly code yesterday, but somehow managed to forget about the daily code.
:/

Anyway, the daily code now works, and OGR-25 stats are now available. I’ve
also started the RC5 run, which I had delayed while I was working on the
OGR stats.

There might be some odd numbers still in stats, but those will have to
wait for tomorrow. :/

I’m running some maintenance on the database right now, so the RC5 run
will be delayed a bit. I might also disable web access for awhile. We also
got the first OGR-25 results back today, expect OGR-25 stats within the
hour.

On a personal note, I switched to a Dvorack keyboard today. I’ll let
everyone know how it goes, but I can say that having your typing speed
suddenly drop to 0 is very, very unsettling! You don’t want to know how
long it’s taken me to type this simple message :/

We trickled a small number of OGR-25 stubs yesterday on the public network
with various number of marks for testing purposes so that we could get
some public feedback about their completion times. For OGR-25, we’ve
settled on distributing so-called “6-stubs” (that is, a stub fragment
where the first 6 marks are specified by our servers). Such stubs will
be displayed by the client as “25/1-2-3-4-5-6”.

Although we generally tried to intersperse these experimental OGR-25 stubs
into the outgoing OGR-24 distribution to minimize giving too many to any
single person, we’ve learned this might not have necessarily been the
case. In any case, since our intended benchmarking use of these
experimental stubs is finished, if you see that your client is working on
a “25/” stub that does not have exactly 6 values after the slash then you
can feel free to discard your entire buff-in.ogr containing these
experimental OGR-25 stubs, if you like.

We have added a distributed.net News page to the site which will be updated
monthly with brief updates on our projects and any other newsworthy items
that have relevance to distributed.net.

We have also updated the press kit page, many thanks to Tempest3K for his
help with this task.

There are currently quite a few problems on the non-English side of the
web site and my next task is to do as much as we can to get it tidy and
up-to-date as soon as possible. We are also working to fix other issues
that have been reported in other parts of the site.

Just thought I’d let it be known that we are now beginning to distribute
OGR-25 stubs right now. Although we have not yet fully received back
completed stubs for the first pass over OGR-24, it’s important for us to
allow a reasonable amount of time before reissuing OGR-24 stubs that we
have not yet received responses for.

It is important to note that there is nothing you need to explicitly do
to accommodate the OGR-25 stubs if your client has already been working
on OGR-24. Perhaps even more important to stress is the fact that you
should NOT intentionally dump or discard your existing OGR-24 buffers so
that you can begin working on OGR-25 sooner.

It’s also worth pointing out that due to the nature of the OGR project,
there will be a second complete pass over the OGR-24 stubs so that the
final nodecount data can be correlated between the two passes. Currently,
we’ve received back about 86.39% of the stubs necessary for the first
pass. However, since it’s not necessary to wait for the first pass to be
completed before starting the second pass, we’ve already finished partial
distribution of the second pass stubs and have received back 28.91% of
them so far.

Keep those clients running! And if you haven’t yet added your OGR client
benchmarks to our speed database, I encourage you to visit
http://www.distributed.net/speed/ today! Moo. ]:8)

Thanks to Wim ten Have and the dedicated, industrious folks at Sybase,
we’re getting closer to being able to deploy statsbox as a FreeBSD machine.
Earlier this week, Sybase re-released their Sybase ASE for Linux with a
relaxed license that allows it to be run on a FreeBSD machine using Linux
ABI compatibility. Plus — the really big deal — native libs for FreeBSD
which allows us to compile php and all that stuff.

I’ve spent much of today setting up a scrub installation on a box at my
house and so far it looks quite promising. A few hiccups with sqsh and
I still don’t have php talking, but it’s close.

There’s no other full-featured sql server around that’s free for both
development and deployment. It’s a hell of a deal.

http://www.sybase.com/linux/ase/

(and, since some of those links are broken)

http://www.sybase.com/detail/1,3151,1009264,00.html

(Just to be clear, I’m really enthused about this recent development.
We certainly don’t get anything for endorsing Sybase. )
