staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

I’ll be AFK this weekend on a camping trip. My in-box hasn’t been overrun with
complaints about broken stats, so I assume everything’s ok. Nugget seems to remember
how stats work after his mini-vacation last weekend (;P), so if anything explodes,
it’s probably safe to talk to nugget about it. :)

See everyone on Monday.

Some of you have noticed that we’re having some difficulty with stats still
showing your email address even after you change your settings to list you with
your name, or as ‘Participant #xxxxxx’. There’s two reasons for this. First,
plist.php3 (used for the top 100) and psummary.php3 (your actual stats page)
need to be changed so that they will look at your listmode setting. Nobody
realized that they didn’t do this until the recent incident with the spammer.
Second, php seems to be caching the old value of listmode. It appears that when
you change your settings, the database does actually get updated, but php won’t
reflect it for some time. It might be tied into the stats run, or it might not
(the stats-run shouldn’t affect it).

I probably won’t be able to work on these things until Monday; this weekend is
dedicated to doing some serious work on my Jeep
(http://www.enteract.com/~nasby/jeep for those who care… and note that a Jeep
could easily run over Nugget’s or Nitehawk’s Miata ;P), but I’ll work on it as
soon as I can. Thanks again for your patience.

Well, gregh’s keen eye already spotted an error… the yesterday column in
the team members listing shows how many blocks that person did yesterday, not
how many they did for the team yesterday. So it’s wrong for anyone who used to
be on your team and left it but did blocks yesterday, if that makes sense. I’ll
fix it tomorrow.

Sorry about the cowfusion. }:8/

The ‘stats hounds’ out there might notice that the team members listing
suddenly got a little better tonight… I’ve been playing around with it.
One undocumented feature is that it will also show just members who
contributed blocks to the team yesterday… to see that, just add a ‘&source=y’
to the url. For example:

http://stats.distributed.net/rc5-64/tmember.php3?team=1828&source=y

As you can see, I’m #3 for my team yesterday… I’ve got some catching up to
do, so I’ll wrap this up and let the client have free reign again. ;)

Hopefully I’ll have the links on the team summary page updated tomorrow… I’m
tired now and afraid I’ll break something if I mess with it now.

Enjoy!

For those of you who’ve been getting mysterious emails from bugzilla recently,
that would be because we’re in the process of putting the old bugs back in
the system. You can safely ignore them, and as soon as all the bugs are in,
we should be able to bring bugzilla back online.

We’ve made a rather astonishing break-through on the cores. Unfortunately, we
can’t do an official release of the info just yet for a number of reasons, but
we wanted to let our most dedicated users (those that read the .plans ;) )
know about this as soon as possible. So, take a look at

Although I don’t hold a ‘high visibility position’ like stats or operations, I
have been working on things; they’ve just all been ‘internal’. :)

One of those things is bringing more support staff on board. DCTI has grown
tremendously in the past year. While this is a Good Thing ™, it also means
that it’s more and more difficult for us to keep things under control and
running smoothly. To facilitate this, we’re looking for a Logistics Coordinator.
It’s hard to sum up in one sentence what this person(s) will be doing, so I
won’t try. We’ll be announcing more info in the coming weeks.

I’ve handed off the job of Regional Support Coordinator to Jerome Froment-Curtil
(JFC), and he’s putting a lot of effort into it! He just showed me the tool he’s
working on to allow our regional support staff to translate web pages for us
and it looks very cool indeed. It’s still in very early beta, so I’m sure it
will be a while before it’s up and running, but we are moving closer to having
multi-lingual pages.

Those of you who are subscribed to rc5@lists.distributed.net have no doubt
noticed that things have been a tad flaky of late. EA is working on the
problem, and as soon as he gets it fixed we’ll be able to return the list to
normal. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you should really
visit our mailing list page!

On a personal note, I want to thank everyone who’s sent me their well-wishes.
For those that don’t know, my Mom had a heart attack 2/18. She’s now doing fine,
and the support I’ve gotten from DCTI has been heart-warming. Thanks!!!

I’ve talked to our coders about the problems some users have been having with
connecting to the proxy network. If you are getting a ‘Fetch::Bad request’
message, then the proxy is either out of DES blocks, or your http proxy switched
servers during the middle of the transmission. If you get this message during
flush, then it’s simply a proxy problem. Make sure you’re using the closest
possible round-robbin (euro80 or us80 for example), or as a last case effort,
try using a specific proxy that’s close to you.

If you are seeing other network errors, _and_ you can pin them down (when the
errors occur, what the error message is, what your current config is, what
affect different config settings have, etc.), then please email info to
rc5help@distributed.net.

Of course, for _any_ bug reports, make sure and include your actual version
number. ‘The latest client’ could be any client…

For you depressed stats mongers ;), Nugget has gotten most of the log files into
the stats-box, but they haven’t been audited yet.
