Something went wrong with the key master today, and it quit logging results.
This is currently under investigation, but the net result is that stats
will be low for 5/29 and 5/30. We will hopefully be able to recover the
data and give everyone credit at a later date.

Stats seem to be updating properly now. Once OGR is caught up, I’ll turn
the web back on and start rc5.

OGR-24 stats got messed up somehow. I’m looking into it. In the meantime,

Just to let everyone know and clarify the facts, we are now in the middle
of preventative replacements to three of our primary servers: nodezero,
keymaster, and statsbox. The new keymaster hardware has only recently
been ordered, so it will still be a couple of weeks before the transition
to the new hardware will be made–Nugget’s 10-may-2001 plan entry describes
the keymaster’s new specs. The configuration of the new statsbox (“blower”)
is still progressing slowly, but most of the blockers have been resolved
and so its preparation has now been resumed.

The replacement of nodezero, our primary webserver, cgi, and shell machine,
has been a long-awaited event and its migration was quietly initiated a
couple of weeks ago when it was introduced into the round-robin DNS pool
for the general static www.d.net content. Tonight I am initiating migration
of the primary CGI facilities to the new machine, with selective CGI
content remaining on the old machine temporarily. Specifically the plans,
user webpages, bugzilla, and stats graphs will temporarily remain on
“oldcgi” instead of “n0cgi” (which now points to the new server). I have
taken measures to ensure that automatic redirects between the servers are
in place during this transition period and do not expect any significant
inability to access our web content, nor do I expect any manual intervention
to be required by anyone accessing our site.

Well, distributed.net has just spent the largest single sum of money it’s
ever spent (barring prize payments). It’s well-past time to upgrade our
aging keymaster, so I just placed an order for a nice Dell PowerEdge 2550.

The new box will add reliability in the form of RAID and the twin CPUs
will take advantage to the better threading model that cow recently added
to the master code. We’ll also really appreciate the additional drive
space.

I apologize for letting the ledger fall a bit stale lately, we’ve changed
banks (with my move to Austin) and I haven’t found the time to bring the
online register up to date. I will get it updated this week to reflect
this purchase as well as other spending that DCTI has made.

Master was down for a few hours yesterday, so stats didn’t run last night.
They’re running now, and should be complete in 6 hours or so.
