staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

The RC5 statsrun died for some reason last night, probably due to a database
deadlock. I’m re-running them by hand right now.

I’m working on an improvement to our current team join code. The new code
will speed up the statsrun, and will make things a bit more accurate (the
current system bases team membership on a participant’s team setting at
the time of the statsrun, instead of noting the date that someone joins
a team and using that info to determine what team someone belonged to on
a given date).

Unfortunately, in order to do this, I have to disable team joins until
the conversion is complete.

As soon as the new join process is in place, I’ll be able to re-do the
statsrun to make use of the new data. Team joins will be re-enabled before
I tackle the statsrun though.

Just got back from a short trip.. somehow, tally knew I was gone and
decided to barf on OGR-25 stats last night. I’m way to tired to look into
it now, but I’ll work on it first thing tomorrow.

Well, it’s obviously taken quite a bit longer than I thought it would to
get the OGR-25 stats up and running. I tested multiple project’s on the
hourly code yesterday, but somehow managed to forget about the daily code.
:/

Anyway, the daily code now works, and OGR-25 stats are now available. I’ve
also started the RC5 run, which I had delayed while I was working on the
OGR stats.

There might be some odd numbers still in stats, but those will have to
wait for tomorrow. :/

I’m running some maintenance on the database right now, so the RC5 run
will be delayed a bit. I might also disable web access for awhile. We also
got the first OGR-25 results back today, expect OGR-25 stats within the
hour.

On a personal note, I switched to a Dvorack keyboard today. I’ll let
everyone know how it goes, but I can say that having your typing speed
suddenly drop to 0 is very, very unsettling! You don’t want to know how
long it’s taken me to type this simple message :/

We trickled a small number of OGR-25 stubs yesterday on the public network
with various number of marks for testing purposes so that we could get
some public feedback about their completion times. For OGR-25, we’ve
settled on distributing so-called “6-stubs” (that is, a stub fragment
where the first 6 marks are specified by our servers). Such stubs will
be displayed by the client as “25/1-2-3-4-5-6”.

Although we generally tried to intersperse these experimental OGR-25 stubs
into the outgoing OGR-24 distribution to minimize giving too many to any
single person, we’ve learned this might not have necessarily been the
case. In any case, since our intended benchmarking use of these
experimental stubs is finished, if you see that your client is working on
a “25/” stub that does not have exactly 6 values after the slash then you
can feel free to discard your entire buff-in.ogr containing these
experimental OGR-25 stubs, if you like.
