staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Well, it’s been a long haul but OGR is finally live! Thanks for everybody’s
support while we worked out all the last bugs. We now have a client that
works with contests other than cryptography challenges, which itself is
worth lots.

Good luck!

Yes, the OGR contest launch has been moved forward slightly just to give
us a little more time to syncronize all of our upgrades behind the scenes.
It has now been officially set for Tue Feb 15 06:00 UTC.

Stats are still running happily away, and should finish sometime tonight,
so I’ve turned web access back on. Since web access was disabled during
the 2/9 and 2/10 runs, the static pages are out of date right now (they’re
probably showing 2/11 data). As 2/12 and 2/13 run, they should update
(2/11 is running right now, fwiw).

Stats are now running for 2/9-2/11. I’ve turned off web access in order
to speed this up.

Update: after further investigation, the stats for 2/9 were actually run
twice, so I will also be removing that day and re-importing.

As some of you have noticed, the data for 2/10 is MIA from stats. I’m not
sure what caused this, but in order to fix it I plan on re-importing that
day. As well, stats didn’t run last night, so I’ll re-run those at the
same time. The easiest way for me to do this is just to remove 2/11 from
the database and run all 3 days, which is what I intend to do, so don’t
be alarmed when the data from 2/11 ‘disappears’ all the sudden.

More info as it’s available.

The following clients have been updated/added:

– FreeBSD [ELF/x86/MT] v2.8007.458b

this version fixes a coredump in the freebsd client.

Don’t forget to participate in OGR you must have client that is v2.8007.458
or above and a personal proxy v311 or above. Also if you use cascading
proxies all proxies in the chain must be v311 or above.

If you plan on writing any kind of proxylog analyzer, be aware that the
OGR log format in v311 is not the same as v313.

Proxy v313 is recommended over v311 due to a number of known networking
issues in build v311. So please use v313 when available for your platform.

Please see http://www.distributed.net/~bovine/fom/index.cgi?file=20 if
you have questions about OGR.

Two quick updates on stats.

I’m working on enabling stats for OGR. It’s not as simple as it sounds,
because there’s no 100% we can measure ourselves against. There’s also
a lot more work units than any of our crypto contests to this point. I’m
out of town Sunday until Tuesday at a conference for my day-job. Don’t
know how much I’ll get done while I’m out. Just to let you know what to
expect, it’s very possible we won’t have OGR stats until OGR-24 is finished
– it’s a very short OGR ruler. You have my word, you’ll get them, even
if it’s after the fact.

I’ve been made aware that participant stats for Feb 10 are missing. I
can’t do much until Nugget returns after this weekend, but I’m confident
we’ll get them back. Don’t worry, none of your work has been lost.
Remember, the real RC5-64 work happens before stats sees anything.
