staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Ok… I guess this is what I guess for saying this would only take ten
minutes. The update query is currently blocked by one of the statsrun
queries. If the query doesn’t clear soon, I’ll just turn stats back on.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Per jfc’s request, I’m combining fr and fx in the stats database. I’ve
turned access off while I’m doing this to protect data integrity (though
it shouldn’t be needed). Should be back up in ten minutes or less.

I’ve rewritten the speed database submission page so that it is much
friendlier. Additionally, the database updating process is now completely
automated, so your entries should now be immediately visible. Go check
it out today by visiting the speed page at http://www.distributed.net/speed/
and clicking on the “Submit” link.

Statsbox will be offline briefly while we add new drives. Thanks for your

The OGR-24 search has been suspended as of 07:15 UTC 23 Feb 2000.

We will restart it later. For more information including how to speed
the return to rc5, see:

Thanks for your participation.

For those of you wondering about stats for Feb. 19… no, they didn’t run.
I’m pretty sure we ran out of disk space again (we were VERY close when
I looked today). I’ve cleaned out some old stuff, so we should be good to
go. Rather than doing a statsrun in the middle of the day, I’ll just let
to-night’s statsrun handle things.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

I can belatedly announce the release of dnetc458-linux-ppc-static-mt. A
few notes:

* Built on MkLinux-pre-R1 with gcc 2.95.3 and statically linked against
glibc2.1.3. Hopefully there are no resolver issues, although, now that
I’ve upgraded, I no longer have a glibc2.0 machine on which to test.

* This is the first mt linux-ppc port.

* No AltiVec support. I won’t be able to add AltiVec support to the client
until the kernel supports AltiVec. This support appears to be far from
ready, although admittedly I don’t follow the kernel development lists
that closely.

As most of you have discovered, OGR-24 is underway, although lacking stats.
Throughout the coming days, we’ll be working to get OGR stats online and
functional. While the structure of the OGR stats data doesn’t significantly
differ from the previous RC5/DES/CSC tables, we feel that this is an
appropriate time for us to make some changes to the underlying tables and
the stats updating code. This is why there will be a delay in
implementation.

Additionally, we’ve received two donations from participants who have
asked that their donation be earmarked as prize money for the participant
who “wins” OGR-24 by finding the optimal 24-mark golumb ruler. We plan
on putting some money into the mix as well, and perhaps setting aside some
money for a nonprofit as we’ve done in previous efforts.

It may not amount to anything more than a few hundred dollars and some
cow from omahasteaks.com, but we do intend to offer some form of prize
for OGR contests as our budget permits.
