staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

As users of the newer (440+) win32cli client may have noticed, many of the features that have been requested by users of this list have already been implemented. Work has begun on a remote administration feature and we would like some feedback on this, please send your suggestions by May 14th to rc5@lists.distributed.net. You can also check http://www.distributed.net/~pice/console for current status.

This program will actually be three programs,

1-client
It will be change so that it can receive request for changing *some* of its config info, among then we can have:
block size
network setting
log options
blocks processed
overall keyrate

One item will *not* be allowed to be changed:email, please do not ask.

2-node program
It will ack like a realy to handle config info generated by the console and sent to a client
It will act like relays to handle config info to be sent to the client and no contest info like blocks.

3-management console
So that the user can check/change client configuration working like a config info server

How will it work ?

The client will connect from time to time to one of the nodes and check if there is a console requesting communication with it. If such a console is found the config process is started. Clients connected all the time and without any firewall problem can inform the node this status and just wait until something arrives for it.
Of course all this communication will be encrypted so that you cannot request a client that is not yours to change any info!

Anyone who was hanging around in #distributed today, or kept a close eye
on the proxy status page has probably noticed that the overall keyrate
was lower than normal today. Not on that, but it’s Monday, which is
traditionally our peak day for activity.

As a result of this deflation, stats will be a bit low. You will
probably not see all the blocks you’re expecting. This is nothing to be
concerned about. The coders and network ops spent the day tweaking and
fiddling with a number of performance-related issues in the keyserver
code today. Their experimentation resulted in many periods where the
keymaster was unable to keep up with the incoming flow of blocks.

There’s currently quite a large backlog and it will likely be some time
tomorrow before everything is all caught up. As it stands, the server is
processing blocks at a nice clip. Tomorrow’s stats will be a bit
inflated, and then we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled growth and
expansion as expected.

No blocks have been lost, all is healthy, just a hiccup.

Oh, and NiteHawk is making good progress on the team member’s listing.
Feel free to mail him with your words of encouragement. :)

As I’ve announced on the proxyper mailing list, a pre-release version
of the next version (build 306) for win32 has been made available for
limited testing by experienced proxy users only. If you download this
test version, please send me feedback at bovine@distributed.net even
if you have no problems with it. You can grab the version from:
http://bruteforce.st.hmc.edu/~jlawson/beta/

There have been lots of buffer improvements to address the input I
received regarding the use of the incrementally updated file-system
based buffering that was used in the 300-304 builds. Additionally,
the networking subsystem has undergone a significant amount of work to
improve compatibility with even more http proxy implementations. I’ve
also added a new network communications protocol, generic proxy, for
people who are able to use a text-protocol to establish a connection
through a gateway machine.

We have already received a number of messages regarding this
pre-release version and have addressed a couple of issues that were
brought to my attention. Remember, if you download, please send me
feedback. Hopefully we will see a release very soon now! :)
