staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

I’ve put a rate clock up for the duration of the CSC contest. It
currently refreshes every two minutes, and talks directly to the master
keyserver. These stats are current.

Moo.

I’m back, after an eleven-month hiatus. I’m doing the Image Thing and
you’ll be seeing the product of my efforts in short order, I do believe.

I’m looking for good writers. If you can write, please send a short copy
of something you’ve written to vetere@distributed.net . I’m going to begin
(in a week or so) rewriting the dnet web site and help documentation, in
an effort to make the place a lot more user friendly.

Did a bit of updatin’ on /faq/ today. New files:

RC5DES Client Documentation: http://www.distributed.net/faq/rc5des.html
Mac OS Client Documentation: http://www.distributed.net/faq/macos.html

Other tweaks as well. The new generic MacOS doc will be included under
Help in all further distributions of the client.

All .420-423 clients have been declared unfit for operation, on grounds
they revert to the rc5 project after running out of des blocks.

It is requested that you downgrade to a .41x series client immediately.
All .420-423 clients are being removed from the distribution sites as I
post this.

I should make clear that there is nothing wrong with the actual
block-processing code in these clients; your rc5 work is valid and you
will retain credit for it. The problem lies solely in the
project-selection code, and does not affect actual work in any way.

Build 424 will remedy the problem. Watch cyp’s plan for further
information.

Craig Durkin, #distributed lurker and altogether too helpful a guy, has
compiled the new DES-III FAQ. I recomend you take a looksee at it –
though if you’ve been following this planboard at all, you’ll know
everything on it by now.

Adam L. ‘Duncan’ Beberg has set up a survey at
http://www.distributed.net/survey.html to gauge desire for various
distributed.net consumables. Currently, the tshirt, mug and a write-in
option for some strange thing called a ‘bumper sticker’ are in the lead.

The distributed.net .plans are now provided via email daily at 0000 UTC.
Cool, eh?

To subscribe to the mailing list, send a message to
majordomo@lists.distributed.net with the body ‘subscribe plans ‘
followed by your address.

There may be a few bugs in the first day or so, but I’m sure I’ll be
able to work them out. Cough.

The MacOS 412e clients have been placed in the pre-release directory on
ftp.distributed.net. In all likelihood, they will -never- be released.
We expect the 420 MacOS build to be complete near what would be the
release date of the 412e clients (one week from today)… two releases
in a row may prove confusion.

So, if you’re astute enough to be a .plan-reader, you’ll have a MacOS
client that’s got cosmetic fixes, a G3 Upgrade Card detection bugfixes,
and that only a few other people have.

Again, for clarity’s sake: these are -prerelease- clients. Do not
redistribute them.

distributed.net .plans are now easily browsable in archive form through
the ‘Archive’ link off the main finger page. An example:

http://nodezero.distributed.net/cgi/planarc.cgi?user=vetere

This should prove more useful as our plans tip over the 128-line limit,
which they’re approaching…

The new beta testing signup page is online and operational. However, I’m
keeping the URL quiet for now. :)

Next up on list: distributed.net .plan archive display from a central
source and after that, stats emailing…
