staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

feedback on the beta has been generally positive, and a couple bugs have
been reported which we will try to fix. Thank you. The reason some
individuals are experiencing difficulty expanding the archive is that it
is in Stuffit5 format. sorry for any inconvienence this may have caused.

bugs so far:
1) window coordinate bug
2) possible large block support bug

note: the following MacOS client is not a final release. It is beta. As such
it may not function as you would expect it to. I am asking for user feedback
running these clients. Currently, only the GUI is available, but the FBA should
be shortly.

Expected Problems:
1) slower key rate under MacOS 8.6

thanks!

ok, time for a quick update. There have been lots of reports of the MacOS
client reporting an error when running on version 8.6. This is a known
problem and we are in the process of fixing the last few bugs, OS related
or not, before releasing a new client. The current client will continue to
function on 8.6, but the key rate (especially on MP machines) may be degraded.
Thanks for your patience.

amazingly enough, there are finally new MacOS 68k clients (412f) that
don’t crash on OSes previous to 7.6.x. Check out clients.html.

well, the DES contest is delayed, so grab and test the latest MacOS clients now at
href=”http://http.distributed.net/pub/dcti/current-client/rc5des-macos-ppc-gui.sit.bin”>http://http.distributed.net/pub/dcti/current-client/rc5des-macos-ppc-gui.sit.bin.
Turning off MP Support if you have only one processor may or may not affect your key rate,
so try it out.

Been awhile, but there is good news to report. Work has continued on the MacOS PPC
v2.7102.421 client mostly through the effort of Peter DiCamillo. A stable fba
version is planned for release shortly after the GUI client. Please do not ask for
a copy of the beta, as there is still much work to be done. Progress is being made,
just hang in there a little longer.

Feature of the month: burst (coalescing) flush: flush 4 to 8 times faster than before.

Since the last exciting installment:

Vetere mentioned that the 412e client has been released. If you have a 68k or an
upgraded 601, or a hankering for the buffer bars to be appearance compliant, go
snatch it (see his .plan for details). In other news, the new MacOS Client coding
is benefiting from Peter DiCamillo and most of the rest of us having several days
off from school/work for Thanksgiving.
