staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

The latest build (313) of the personal proxy has been made officially
available for Win32, FreeBSD, and Linux/x86. Builds for the other
platforms are expected to follow soon. There have been many fixes and
changes made to this new version, including finalized support for the
upcoming OGR contest. http://www.distributed.net/download/proxies.html

We’ve been told by a number of users that their dnetc clients have
failed to automatically resume RC5 after the client had received the
CSC contest closure indicator. The problem seems to affect a fair
number of machines, and it may be necessary for you to manually quit
and restart your client to get it to properly resume RC5. No other
actions should be necessary (provided your client has already figured
out that CSC is over, by allowing it to talk to the keyservers).

I’ve placed a new version of the Java Log Visualizer (v1.1) on the
mirrors, so you should be able to download it off of the add-ons page.
This new version features a number of user-interface and log parsing
corrections. Of course full Java source code is included.

We’ve gotten a handful of questions recently from people who are
excited about the recent announcement about work verification. I’d
just like to take this opportunity to point people to the existence of
an old document of mine that has been public for awhile that describes
many of the issues involved and some of the methods we had considered.

The first major release of the new Java Log Visualizer has been made
available on the addons page with accompanying source. This new Java
application (not applet) should be usable on any platform with a
reasonable Java 1.1 implementation. You can find the new version at

I’ve updated http://www.distributed.net/source/ with the latest source
code for the Win32 Log Visualizer (v1.1), the Win32 MooSounds utility
(v1.0a), and the preliminary source of the Java Log Visualizer (v0.9).

The Java Log Visualizer source was predominantly written by Willie Goo
at my request, though I did all of the parsing code and final cleanup
to get it actually working. Compiled versions of the Java Log
Visualizer have intentionally not yet been provided because it is
still a little bit aways from being useful to non-developers, however
I’m making what I have available because a number of people have
expressed their interest in helping with development. If any Java
people are interested in working on this, drop me an email since I
will likely not get too much more progress done on this soon.

I would welcome hearing from people who have suggestions or
development time to contribute to these or any other possible
utilities.

I had a little bit of spare time, so I decided to make a quick pass at
rewriting the client speed database pages. The keyrate statistics now
are generated from a single frontend CGI, instead of separate pages
containing hand-built queries for each of the different combinations.
This should also allow us to more easily maintain these pages in the
future. You can see these new pages at http://www.distributed.net/speed/

I’ve just made version 1.1 of the LOGVIS (Log Visualizer) utility
available for download. It adds a number of improvements in user
interface, including drag-and-drop file acceptance, command line
filename opening, Reload menu option, Status bar text updates, and
several other minor things. You can find the download link on our
addons page: http://www.distributed.net/download/addon.html

By popular request, a new add-on utility is being provided to people
who have not been able to live with the new Win32 client because it
couldn’t “moo” like the old Win32GUI client could. The MooSounds
utility was developed by Scott Ludwig and myself, and a download link
has been provided on http://www.distributed.net/download/addon.html

Along with the work I’ve been doing to clean up the website, I’ve also
gone through the distributed.net third-party addons page and have
removed all of the stale links, and reorganized it in a more accessible
table layout. I’ve also added a bunch of new links to things that
many utilities that people may have not been aware were available. If
anyone is aware of any other great utilities that aren’t listed, I
encourage you to write to me so that I can add it!
