staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Just to let everyone know, there is currently a large network routing
outage that is preventing some people from being able to access to
some of our servers. We hope to have this problem resolved within the
next few hours and will post updated details when they are available.

Just thought I’d share some of my weekend distributed.net humor with
anyone happening to read this:

http://www.bovine.net/~jlawson/gallery/distributed-net/dnet_sign2

Our public roadsides seem to be getting cluttered with more and more
of those useless signs every day…

Just thought I’d include a link to Bug 2469 just so that people would
be aware of some of the outstanding issues with the planfile system.

Be advised that some network changes are occurring at the datacenter
where blower (stats.distributed.net) is hosted, so there might be some
connectivity issues while the DNS changes propagate.

Some minor issues discovered during the mail server changes were
fixed. This included some disruption of service to the email block
fetcher/flusher, and also some bounced mail that was sent to some
distributed.net staff mail addresses. If you received a bounce to
something you were trying to email, you might want to retry now.

This plan entry is mostly just a test to see if our plan system is
fully operational again. Some more things have successfully been
incrementally migrated off of one of our old servers (this time email,
plans, email fetch/flusher) as of tonight. With luck there will not
be any observable glitches. :)

Please be advised that we are in the middle of finishing up a
migration of our webserver to a new machine, so there many be an
increase in broken things over the new few days. Among these things
may include planfiles, the plan mailing lists, web home directories,
and possibly other things. Do not panic, remain calm. Thanks.

A few people have written me with an interest in the reasons behind the
decision to restrict arbitrary HTML in the “motto” field of teams and
participants. Although I’ve been replying individually when people email
me, I’ve created a FAQ entry that summarizes many of the reasons here:

We’ve had to make some changes to what’s allowed to be entered in the
“motto” field for both teams and participants on the stats site. Previously
these fields where unrestricted text fields that even allowed raw HTML to
be entered, however we’ve recently decided that those fields need to be
restricted to a more limited subset of tags. If your participant or team
page included customized HTML tags, you should consider modifying them to
instead use the allowed square-bracket alternatives that are listed on
the editing page (.., .., [BR], etc).

lists.distributed.net is under a Hurricane watch for Hurricane Michelle,
and the area is under mandatory evacuation. The colo guy is going to be
riding it out, but the potential for loss of electricity is fairly high,
so there may be some disruption of list services.

As dbaker has already announced in his plan, the new machine to replace
our aging keymaster has finally been installed and migrated! You can read
more details about the hardware specs here:
http://cgi.distributed.net/cgi/planarc.cgi?user=dbaker&plan=2001-07-01.21:45

You can also see a picture that Daniel took of me standing in front of
the new machine at our collocation center. The actual machine is
the rack-mounted machine with the silver grill that is just below my
eye-level in the image. (We actually have a total of 4 machines in that
rack, but the others aren’t as visible due to the color and angle of them
in the image–one of them is the old keymaster, another is a content
mirror, and the other is non-critical machine).
