staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

As Accipiter mentioned in his plan a few days ago, we have just
launched a redesign of our website that is up-to-date with modern
web-design standards. We’ve tried to keep the appearance relatively
close to the style of the old website, so you might not even notice
any difference if you’re not looking carefully enough.

Optimal viewing of our website now requires the use of a modern
web-browser that honors CSS, which means that Netscape Navigator 4.x
is out. We’ve also taken this opportunity to synchronize the content
on some of our foreign-language translation pages.

There have also been a lot of URL changes due both in part to the
conversion to PHP and the reorganization of certain redundant pages.
Where possible, we’ve tried to put redirects in place to allow the
majority of traffic continue to reach the page that was originally
being requested. If you have bookmarks or pages that link to our
website, you might want to take this opportunity to update them and
possibly remove links to pages that no longer exist.

Similar updates to our stats site and n0cgi will probably be done
gradually and independently over the following few weeks as time is
available. If you notice any problems with specific webpages on our
site, feel free to send an email to bovine@distributed.net or open a
bug in our bugzilla database.

I’ve added a number of new pre-release clients to the download page at:
http://www1.distributed.net/download/prerelease.html

The v2.9005.483 clients for x86 platforms all include a fixed version of the
AMD RC5-72 core that was found to be buggy in the previous set of pre-release
clients. Thanks to all of the motivated testers who helped us to find this flaw
while the client was still in pre-release status.

The speed database pages at http://n0cgi.distributed.net/speed/ have
undergone a significant rewrite and cleanup. The pages have been
converted from Perl to PHP to simplify implementation and maintenance.
Additionally, a new voting facility has been added to allow people to
more easily report specific entries as being potentially bogus.

Also the statistics link on our main website has been updated to
include links to the new RC5-72 and OGR plots that pstadt had created:
http://n0cgi.distributed.net/statistics/

There is a new public source tarball available for download from
http://www.distributed.net/source/

Many new clients for various platforms have been put on both the
release and prerelease pages. Two personal proxies have also moved
from the prerelease page to the formal release page.

You can look at the Updates page to see a list of the official client
releases by date: http://www1.distributed.net/download/updates.html

Experienced MacOS X users might be interested in helping test the
current prerelease Mac client as it includes some very dramatic rc5-72
altivec speed increases, making it faster than rc5-64 was for some.
The prerelease clients for other platforms may also have slight speed
increases over previous versions as well.

— Official releases —

These release-candidate personal proxies were formally moved to the
official release page:

* proxyper332-macosx-ppc.tar.gz
* proxyper333-freebsd-x86.tar.gz
* proxyper333-linux-x86-glibc21.tar.gz
* proxyper333-linux-x86.tar.gz
* proxyper333-os2-x86.zip
* proxyper333-win32-x86.zip

This personal proxy existed on the official release page for a very
short time, but was revoked due to improper SIGIO handling. A
replacement build 334 has been put on the pre-release page (see
below):

* proxyper333-solaris26-sparc.tar.gz

— Pre-releases (release candidates) —

These pre-release x86 clients were available on the pre-release page
for a very short time, but were revoked due to suspected problems with
the new x86 assembly core introduced in that build:

* dnetc479-netbsd-i386-elf.tar.gz
* dnetc479-bsdos4-x86-elf.tar.gz
* dnetc479-bsdos2-x86-aout.tar.gz

These pre-release AmigaOS clients were revoked due to a bug and
replaced by new 479b versions (upgrade to the new version if you
were running an old release candidate):

* dnetc479-amigaos-68k.lha
* dnetc479-amigaos-ppc-pup.lha
* dnetc479-amigaos-ppc-wos.lha

These new release candidate proxies and clients were just added to the
pre-release page:

* proxyper334-solaris26-sparc.tar.gz
* proxyper333-linux-alpha.tar.gz
* dnetc478d-os2-x86.zip
* dnetc478-linux-sh4.tar.gz
* dnetc479-linux-alpha4.tar.gz
* dnetc479-openbsd-sparc-aout.tar.gz

The network to one of our two webservers was unavailable for about 2.5
hours earlier this morning, but connectivity has been restored now.

Additionally (but unrelated), one of our U.S. keyservers was partially
inaccessible for a few days and was finally able to flush a large
number of blocks that had been sent to it, so there was a slight
keyrate spike today as well.

The keymaster is going to be resuming distribution of some of the old
OGR-24 stubs that never got enough redundancy on our network. So if
you have clients that are configured to run OGR you’ll notice some of
these stubs eventually coming your way.
