staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

As many of you have noticed on http://www.distributed.net/rc5/proxyinfo.html,
most of the proxies are listed by their proxy.distributed.net address. By
Sunday, I plan for all proxies to have a proxy.distributed.net address
along with the corresponding RP and LOC records. See my TODO list (above)
for more information about my current proxy DNS project.

Never one to stick to a plan, I’ve gone ahead and started on the x86 card
support. I’ve got most of the integration done, but there are still a few
hairy bits left.

I’ve so far managed to check 3 blocks as x86/RISC OS, and my RiscPC has
an overall rate of 399.82kkeys/s.

The log file graphing is progressing. Just a few parsing problems left to work on.
The CPU detection issue with G3 upgraded x100 PowerMacs saying they still have 601s is
fixed. Peter DiCamillo is making progress on getting the mac client up to date.

Completely restructured Client::Main() and ParseCommandLine() so that
the client object is completely initialized before anything else is done.
This has several advantages, two of which I’ve made use of right away:
(a) win32 and win16 clients know in advance whether they will be running
“modes” or not. This allows them to conditionally allow multiple
instances, ie any number of instances is permitted as long as only
instances is actually crunching.
(b) the implementation of -hide/-quiet for unix’ish clients. User use of
‘>/dev/null &’ is deprecated since the client may actually have
something to say when it starts up (such as choking on a bad command
line option). With -hide/-quiet, having the client say nothing is a
good sign and indicates that the client has started successfully.

I also rewrote much of rc5des.txt today. Specifically, I took out all the
platform specific stuff (now in separate readmes), took out all 10K of
the (mostly obsolete) FAQ, and created a “Help!” section with pointers to
the various sources of assistance available online or already built-in
to the client.

Well, those who are particularly observant (and/or impatient) may have
already noticed that stats are back online. Judging from the relative
calm in my inbox this afternoon, I’m guessing the numbers are close
to reality.

Excuse my brevity, but I’m wiped out. Just thought I’d let everyone
know that statsbox and I seemed to have survived the ordeal. Next
up, we get to forge ahead in a race against space to get statsbox_ii
online before this happens again. :)

Just a quick update:

I’ve shuffled some space around, and I think I’ve bought us another
month or so.We were running out of space due to the additional space
requirements of the daily update process. I’ve “stolen” some space
from tempdb, and re-coded some of the update queries so they use less
space and things seem to be ok.

Just to be safe, I’ve back-tracked the server to the 4-Nov numbers, and
I’m now in the process of catching up. the 4-Nov and 5-Nov numbers are
reloaded and pass a basic sanity check, so today will be spent feeding
the box logs and watching its progress very closely.

I’ll let you know how it goes as it goes.

I’ve changed my direction with the Mac FBA.
It is based on the standard Mac client with an option for hidden
(“faceless”) execution very much like the Win32 client.

This makes much more sense as we can now concentrate on _one_ set of code
rather than two separate sets (the standard client and a modified faceless
branch)

Oh yeah, it’ll have a wicked kewl “About” box… :)

On a personal note: I’ll be down in Orlando, Florida visiting my brother
November 26 – 29. If anyone is in the area and wants to get together for a
refreshment, drop me a line.
