staff blogs

distributed.net staff keep (relatively) up-to-date logs of their activities in .plan files. These were traditionally available via finger, but we've put them on the web for easier consumption.

Today managed to be a pretty good day, goal-wise. I got the majority
of the tasks on my task-list completed and things seem to be running
quite well.

1. I kept my boss happy at hfdirect and earned another day’s pay.
2. I’ve completely written the letter to be mailed to the IRS and
have complied all the necessary enclosures with the exception
of the final Form 1023, which should be a breeze to finish as
it differs only slightly from the last one I sent. Should go
out the door tomorrow.
3. After wrestling with apache for several hours, it looks as if
I’ve convinced mod_auth_mysql to play well with php3.0.3 and
the new httpd is installed and in service. It’s in bovine’s
hands now to do something with them.
5. InterNIC change request was submitted.
8. I feel worlds better now than I did this morning, although
I’m still reluctant to eat much more than saltines and 7Up.

So, what item’s have not been completed:

4. I’ve sluffed this one off onto dbaker. Not my problem now.

6. Statsbox-II didn’t get touched today, and probably won’t again
tomorrow. I would like to mention that last Friday we received an
additional 64Mb RAM for Statsbox-II thanks to the generous donation
of Geoffrey Faivre-Malloy. Thanks, G-Man!

7. Still no idea what to buy paulf for his birthday.

On a completely unrelated note, assuming nothing major explodes, I’m
going to be in attendance at the 1998 Atlanta Linux Showcase on October
23-24. I’m still not certain if I’ll be there on Friday and Saturday
or just on Saturday, but I’m going to swing for both days. If you’re
also going to be in town for the event, let me know… For further
details on the conference, see http://www.ale.org/showcase/

I’ve replaced the finger CGI with a new one written in perl. This one’s a
bit more functional and easier to maintain… same url as always.

Also, mapping.cgi has progressed nicely. For a full demo of features,
check out this url:

http://distributed.net/cgi/mapping.cgi?host=nodezero,rc5stats,chalmers.se

It does size changes and multihost mapping, and supports the creation of a
unique title by adding &title=Words+In+URL+Encoding to the url.

Today’s short-list. If I can accomplish these things, today will be
a resounding success (on order of priority):

o anything hfdirect.com throws at me
o draft and mail response to IRS
o Install mod_auth_mysql into apache without disturbing php
o resolve cow’s glib and silby’s binutil installation issues
o Submit mod forms to InterNIC.
o finally get around to benchmarking revised tot_team / uid code
on statsbox-ii.
o figure out what I’m going to buy paulf for his birthday — needs
to get in the mail soon to arrive in time.
o kick this damn flu.

A fine morning’s Snowboarding yesterday. I ache like a goodun today.

The x86 stuff has arrived from Dominic, but I’ve been to busy with
updating other bits of client code – and real work – to have a look
at it yet.

Lately, I’ve been fiddling around with a web-based tool for handling tech-
support mail. What I’m hoping is that all mail for [help/rc5help]@
distributed.net will filter into this utility, where any number of people
can then log in and reply to requests for help; in addition there would be
options for auto-magically sending/changing passwords, and other such
administrative tasks.

Crack on…

Back, after a trying tryst with an unyielding cast, this hitherto
.planless coder is not surprised to find much afoot at distributed.net.

move on from the realm of ciphers and secrets to rulers and radians.
